Your VicRoads drive test day is definitely one of the most significant milestones in your journey toward independence. However, many learners in Melbourne feel overwhelmed and stress out even at the thought of the day.
Being in this industry for over 15 years now, we, at Punjab Driving School, understand this pressure well. We understand the very mindset of feeling intimidated by test and guide students on how to handle it.
We train our learners through the testing centres at Broadmeadows, Bundoora, and Deer Park. Because, after all, the difference between a ‘Pass’ and a ‘Fail’ is not always about your ability to turn a steering wheel – but more about your ability to manage the mindset.
Why Do You Feel Nervous Before the Test Day
Anxiety usually stems from a fear of the unknown. You might be worried about a difficult examiner, a tricky intersection on the test route, or simply making a small mistake that leads to an ‘Immediate Termination.’
Our mission is to transform that fear into confidence by providing a safe, supportive, and professional learning environment.
1. The Advantage of the Mock Test
One of the most effective ways to eliminate nerves is to remove the unknown factors. Our instructors specialise in the actual test routes used by VicRoads. During a mock test, we replicate the exact conditions of the official assessment.
We use the same scoring criteria, the same technical requirements, and the same routes you will face on the big day. By the time you sit the real test, you have already passed it several times with us, making the official drive feel like just another lesson.
2. The Benefit of Having ‘The Same Care’ for Test
Familiarity breeds confidence. At Punjab Driving School, we strongly recommend that learners take their test in the same dual-controlled vehicle they have used throughout their training.
Every car has a different feel – the sensitivity of the brakes, the weight of the steering, and the biting point of the clutch (for manual learners). By using the car you are comfortable with, your muscle memory takes over, allowing your brain to focus on the road and the examiner’s instructions rather than fumbling with unfamiliar controls.

3. Master the Technical Checks
Examiners look for more than just safe driving; they look for a driver who is actively scanning for hazards.
Exaggerated Head-Checks
When changing lanes or pulling away from a curb, make your head-checks obvious. A slight glance might not be seen by the examiner, so a clear turn of the head proves you are observing your blind spots.
Speed Zone Vigilance
Speeding is a critical error. Be especially mindful of the 40km/h school zones and roadwork areas common in suburbs like St Albans and Bundoora.
4. Physical Preparation and Timing
Your physical state directly impacts your cognitive performance.
Sleep and Nutrition
Ensure you get a full night’s rest and eat a light meal before your test. A hungry or tired brain is more prone to simple mistakes.
Arrive Early
We suggest arriving at the VicRoads office 20 minutes early. This gives you time to process the paperwork, use the facilities, and settle into the environment without feeling rushed.
5. Forgive Your Mistakes
Many students believe that if they stall the car or take a turn slightly wide, they have automatically failed. This is not true. Most minor errors result in a deduction, but you can still pass the test.
If you make a mistake, take a deep breath, reset, and focus on the very next instruction. Why let a mistake on the first turn haunt you for the rest of the drive?
