Getting your learner permit is the first step toward your driving independence.
The 120-Hour Rule: If you are under 21 years of age, there should be a clear record of at least 120 hours of supervised driving (including 20 hours at night) in your myLearners app or logbook.


You get a probationary licence once you pass your practical driving test.
Key Restrictions: Zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and strict mobile phone bans apply to all probationary drivers.
If you have recently moved to Melbourne from another country and have an overseas licence, you will have to get it converted to a Victorian licence within 6 months of your residence in Melbourne.
It is possible that you can convert your overseas licence without taking a driving test, if it is from a recognised country, including the USA, the UK, Japan, or Germany.
If your country is not there on the list of recognised countries, you will have to –
Expert Recommendation: Over all these years, we have seen that even experienced drivers often fail the Victorian Drive Test because of minor technicalities, such as a head-check failure or incorrect steering. To avoid the same, we always recommend overseas drivers to get at least 2-3 brush-up driving lessons. This often helps them learn specific Victorian testing standards.
